SHOPPED OUT (working title)
Divorced 43 year-old parent Polly is in a relationship with three different men..... or is she?
Combining the use of visual 'Tinder-swipe' transitions between the 'different' relationships, with a gender-reversed 'shout out' to Bunuel's Obscure Object of Desire (in which two female actors play the same character), SHOPPED OUT's protagonist Polly questions whether looking for (just) 'THE ONE' has become outdated notion.
In 1998 I wrote, produced and directed the short WINDOW SHOPPING.
Filmed guerrilla-style in b&w 16mm and Hi-8 on the streets of Manhattan, the film starred Jennifer Restak (Molotov Theatre DC) Pedro Pascal (Narcos, Game of Thrones) Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels, In Her Shoes) and Matt Semrick (wherabouts unknown!) The film ends with it’s ‘heroine’ deciding to marry her unseen English boyfriend, after a day reminiscing about 3x ex-boyfriends, each memory triggered by a specific location.
It was (quite) autobiographical and yes readers she did marry him!
18 years on, divorced, back in Manhattan, I wandered the same streets, using Google maps instead of a paper one and re-photographing the architecture (on my phone!) triggering the desire to write SHOPPED OUT.
The film screened at Festivals including Santa Barbara, Leeds and Tel Aviv, was programmed at the ICA and LUX and was shortlisted for a BAFTA.
